Cats just naturally scratch. It’s not something they do just to get to you, they’re trying to keep their claws in shape and stretch their muscles. They don’t have any idea that they might be ruining your expensive furniture.

When your cat feels like scratching, he won’t be picky. In his natural outdoor habitat, he’ll scratch on anything that’s handy. A tree trunk, a downed log, or a fence post suit just fine. Unless you have things like that in your home — and who does? — he’ll pick the next best thing.
